Kolkata: Demonstrating how individual determination can transform an entire community, noted environmental activist and social reformer Parimal Dey marked World Environment Day by distributing more than hundreds of tree saplings among residents at Ganguly Bagan, South Kolkata, reinforcing his long-standing mission of creating a “Clean, Green and Colourful Earth” for future generations.
The initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 100 residents who collected saplings and pledged to contribute towards a greener and more sustainable environment. The programme was attended by Nitin Patel, Member, BJP West Bengal State Council and Former Vice-President, BJP South Kolkata District, and Priyanka Chatterjee, Managing Director, Standard Publicity Pvt. Ltd.
Parimal Dey’s environmental journey has become a remarkable example of grassroots transformation. In 2018, he converted a decades-old garbage dumping ground and neglected pond—once a hub of anti-social activities—into the now-renowned Mother Earth Theme Park. Despite facing significant opposition from influential local groups during the project’s early stages, he remained steadfast in his vision.
Over the years, Dey has spearheaded several community welfare initiatives, including creating green public spaces, developing a butterfly village, ensuring access to drinking water, supporting underprivileged pregnant women with daily nutritional supplements, distributing free sanitary napkins, conducting anti-mosquito drives, and leading extensive relief efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. His annual World Environment Day sapling distribution campaign has also inspired thousands of residents to embrace environmental responsibility.
Speaking on the occasion, Parimal Dey said, “The transformation of a garbage dump into Mother Earth Theme Park taught me that perseverance can overcome any obstacle. There were challenges and resistance, but I never gave up because I believed future generations deserve a cleaner and healthier environment. Inspired by the spirit of ‘Ekti Gaach Mayer Naame’ (A Tree in Mother’s Name), an initiative championed by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, I urge every citizen to plant and nurture at least one tree in honour of their mother. Protecting nature is not just an environmental duty—it is a social responsibility.”
As climate concerns continue to intensify, Dey’s citizen-led movement stands as a powerful example of how local action can create lasting environmental and social impact.
