NH RTIICS PERFORMS EASTERN INDIA’S FIRST MITRACLIP PROCEDURE

  • Team of doctors fix heart valve leakage without surgery

The structural heart team at NH RN Tagore Hospital, Kolkata led by Dr. Debdatta Bhattacharya and Dr. Manik Chopra, performed Eastern India’s first MitraClip procedure in an elderly woman with a faulty mitral valve. MitraClip is a minimally invasive procedure in which a small device / clip is inserted to stop leakage in the heart’s mitral valve.

The patient, a 65 year old lady presented with severe shortness of breath. She had a history of repeated hospital admissions due to heart failure. An echocardiogram revealed severe leakage of the heart’s mitral valve with marked left ventricular dysfunction (pump failure). A heart team comprising of the hospital’s cardiologists and cardiac surgeons was constituted. In view of the patient’s extremely high-risk profile for open heart surgery, it was decided that this innovative minimally-invasive approach was the most suitable option. The procedure was performed with the help of a catheter which was inserted through a vein in the groin area. Advanced imaging was used to guide the catheter to the heart, after which the clip was placed on the mitral valve. This helped reduce the level of leakage from severe to negligible which resulted in dramatic improvement in patient’s overall condition. The patient was sent home in just two days post procedure. This is in contrast to open heart surgery which takes a recovery period of 2-3 weeks and involves cutting open the breast bone at the center of the chest.

Consistent, quality and innovative medical care has been the hallmark of NH RN Tagore Hospital, since its inception. While it has been home to many firsts in terms of cardiac care for eastern India in the past, it has added another feather to its cap by successfully performing the very first 4th Generation MitraClip procedure in this part of the world.

Dr. Debdatta Bhattacharya, Clinical Director, Senior Consultant & Chief of Cath Lab Services (Cardiology, Adult) said, “MitraClip is a very complicated percutaneous procedure but our team pulled it off really well which gives us immense happiness and satisfaction.”

Dr. Manik Chopra, Consultant, Cardiology (Adult) said, “In the past open heart surgery was the only option for valve repair, but with advances in interventional procedures, MitraClip procedure is gaining popularity. With its higher success rate and lower risk of complication, it is sure to become even more popular in the coming days”

Mr. R Venkatesh – Group COO, Narayana Health said, “Such advanced interventions are being mostly done in developed nations and very few centers in India have the expertise to do the same. We are very proud of our team whose joint initiative has brought us this success”.

Mr. Abhijit CP, Facility Director – RN Tagore Hospital, Kolkata said, “This is the first successful Generation-4 MitraClip procedure in this part of the world which has added another feather in our cap”
