Kolkata, 28th January, 2026: North 24 Parganas FC edged past table-toppers JHR Royal City FC Malda | Murshidabad with a narrow 1–0 victory in the first of the two-leg semi-final of the Bengal Super League, played at the East Bengal ground here on Wednesday. Goalkeeper Suraj Ali of North 24 Parganas was adjudged Man of the Match for making some crucial and vital saves for his team.
Despite entering the contest as favourites, JHR Royal City FC were left frustrated as they squandered many chances. North 24 Parganas showed composure and tactical discipline to thwart their opponents and take a slender but crucial advantage ahead of the return leg.
Match expert Bhaskar Ganguly analysed the contest by highlighting JHR Royal City FC’s attacking inefficiency. “JHR’s attacks just weren’t clicking. They got into promising positions but lacked the final execution,” he said. Ganguly however, pointed out that JHR were unlucky to concede a penalty that led to the goal. He also praised Ali for his work under the bar. “He was outstanding between the posts. His crucial saves preserved the clean sheet,” Ganguly added.
The defining moment arrived in the 61st minute when North 24 Parganas were awarded a penalty following a rough tackle on Kuntal Pakhira inside the box. Aidara Cherif Yakhaya stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, despite opposition goalkeeper Sourav Samanta diving the right way.
JHR Royal City FC had finished the group stage above North 24 Parganas, but now face a deficit going into the second leg on January 30 at the Kalyani Stadium. They will have to click properly to keep their tournament ambitions on track
