Independent Calcutta film #Homecoming (English/Bengali/Hindi -NFDC Producer’s Lab Selection 2019@Film Bazaar, Goa during scripting stage), the debut feature film as a writer-producer-director of actor-turned-director Soumyajit Majumdar concluded its final leg of the shoot in the third week of January. This trilingual film produced by arts collective Lok had completed the first schedule of its shooting in February 2020 shortly before the pandemic struck India.
#Homecoming attempts an original form “episodic cinema”. It is about the reunion of a rebellious youth theatre group after seven years during an eventful Nabomi night during Durga Puja. It has brought together an eclectic ensemble cast of more than 30 actors featuring the best of young talents from Bollywood and Tollywood including Sayani Gupta, Hussain Dalal, Tushar Pandey, Soham Majumdar, Plabita Borthakur,Tuhina Das, Pujarini Ghosh, Sayan Ghosh, Sourav Subhra Das, Sreya Bhattacharya, Apratim Chatterjee and Priyanka Mondal among others.
The film also features an eclectic crew which includes National Award winning sound designers Adeep Singh Manki and Anindit Roy, national award winning costume designer Apu Gobinda Mondal and ace editor Bodhaditya Banerjee amongst others. This film is a musical love-letter to Kolkata and features original Hindi songs written and composed by Sameer Rahat ( Rahat Indori’s son, previously composed for shows such as Netflix’s Little Things) and Bengali songs by folk and fusion veteran Satyaki Banerjee. Founding member of the cult Kolkata band Krosswindz, Neil Mukherjee (has worked closely with Pritam, A.R. Rahman and Shankar-Ehsan-Loy) is helming the background score of the film while the roster of singers include the likes of K Mohan (Vocalist of Agnee and Bollywood playback singer) and Amrita Singh (Arijit Singh’s sister).
About the Writer-Producer-Director:
Before taking a break from early 2018 to make #Homecoming, as an actor Soumyajit has been a part of more than 25 varied regional, national as well as international feature films including box-office favourite Bollywood films such as Aashiqui 2, Te3n, commercially successful regional films such as Zulfiqar, Byomkesh Pawrbo, Har Har Byomkesh, Bibaho Diaries, critically acclaimed International projects such as Gandu, French film Crash Test Aglae as well as Cat Sticks and Ghost of the Golden Groves where he was a part of the lead cast. These films have been screened at various film festivals such as Berlin, Cannes and won awards at festivals like Slamdance, South Asian International Film Festival, Mammoth Lake and Chicago Underground International Film Festival. The Founder-Director of Lok (formed on 3rd Jan 2010) Soumyajit is a part of the prestigious Global Changemakers Network since 2010.
