DM Hospitals Hosts 20th Health Fair at Thakurpukur Campus to Raise Awareness on Chronic Kidney Disease

The Academic Council of DM Hospitals, Thakurpukur, successfully organized its 20th Health Fair on the hospital premises. This year, students from local schools came forward to create awareness among the general public about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).Since its inception in 2007, DM Hospitals has been committed to public health awareness. Under the visionary leadership of renowned Nephrologist and Chairperson of the hospital, Dr. Dayanath Mishra, and with the support of Administrative Director Ms. Annapurna Mishra, the hospital has been organizing annual health fairs to educate people about kidney disease. Dr. Mishra, drawing from his vast experience, realized that to truly reach the common people of our country, physicians must be joined by the student community. With this vision, DM Hospitals initiated educational programs in local schools to train students on the fundamentals of chronic kidney disease.
India ranks second in the world after China in the burden of chronic kidney disease. The primary causes of CKD are uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure. Patients with these conditions are advised to undergo kidney function tests at least once a year. Early detection at the initial stage can help halt the progression of the disease.
Two months prior to every Health Fair, students from participating schools undergo detailed training on the early signs and prevention of kidney disease. This ensures that the message is deeply ingrained in young minds, enabling them to spread awareness within their families and neighborhoods with ease. At this year’s 20th Health Fair, school students also trained members of the public in CPR – Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. Knowledge of CPR can help save the life of a person who suddenly collapses due to cardiac arrest.
Every year, DM Hospitals provides specialized health training to 50 selected students. The hospital also conducts regular CMEs – Continuing Medical Education programs every month for General Practitioners and the public on diabetes and hypertension. To date, DM Hospitals has organized more than 150 such CMEs.
Numerous patients currently undergoing treatment at DM Hospitals participated in the Health Fair and shared their experiences, as well as the benefits and challenges of their care. The hospital has a dedicated Emergency Department to manage acute kidney emergencies. Doctors at the fair emphasized that individuals with nephritis, diabetes, or high blood pressure must undergo regular kidney check-ups. Several hundred local residents participated in the fair and availed free health check-ups. Those identified as high-risk were counseled regarding follow-up treatment.
