As the world marks World Sleep Day on March 15th, CMRI proudly announces the launch of its groundbreaking sleep laboratory, marking a significant milestone in addressing the global epidemic of sleep disorders. This is in line with the theme for 2024 “Sleep Equity for Global Health”. The theme highlights the differences in sleep health between populations around the world, which can lead to additional burdens and health inequities Dedicated to promoting good sleep for good health, CMRI’s state-of-the-art facility aims to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, particularly Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), in the Indian population. These disorders not only affect the quality of life and productivity of individuals but also impose a significant economic burden on society.
Dr. Raja Dhar, HOD, Department of Pulmonology, CMRI emphasized, “Despite being a major risk factor for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, sleep disorders like OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnoea) remain under-recognized in our society. Snoring, often dismissed lightly, can be a sign of underlying sleep apnoea, leading to serious health consequences if left untreated.”

Dr. Arup Halder, Consultant, Department of Pulmonology, CMRI explains, “The newly launched sleep laboratory at CMRI is the first of its kind in Eastern India, offering comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services under one roof. Equipped with advanced technology and staffed with experienced professionals, the facility aims to provide accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for various sleep disorders. The services offered include Level 1, 2, and 3 sleep studies, overnight oximetry, multiple sleep latency tests, maintenance of wakefulness tests, and a range of therapeutic interventions such as CPAP titration, myofunctional therapy, and drug-induced sleep endoscopy”.

“We are proud to introduce this pioneering initiative, which not only addresses the growing prevalence of sleep disorders but also serves as a training centre for healthcare professionals in Eastern India,” said Sombrata Roy, Unit Head of CMRI “By raising awareness, promoting early diagnosis, and offering personalized treatment, we aim to improve sleep health and overall well-being in our community.” The launch of the sleep laboratory underscores the commitment to advancing sleep medicine and promoting sleep equity for all.
