A Look Back at 2020: Year in Review by Uber

Anando Sangbad Live: Uber released today its annual analysis- “A Look Back at 2020: Year in Review” – a glimpse on how Indian’s ‘Ubered’ during the lockdown and as cities started opening up. Backed by insights and data, the report highlights Uber’s support to its communities by shifting focus to ‘Move What Matters.’

Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India and South Asia, said, “In March, the world came to a screeching halt due to Covid-19. In just a few days, we went from connecting millions of rides a week to urging our riders to stay home. We wanted to stand in solidarity with the Government and committed to move what mattered most: serving frontline healthcare workers, facilitating essential trips for citizens, supporting vulnerable communities, and keeping vital supply chains moving. We found meaningful ways to cater to the evolving needs of our communities, while creating livelihood opportunities for our drivers. Thank you for safely riding and driving with Uber this year – we look forward to being a part of your 2021.”

By the numbers

  • 10 Million: Provided 10 million rides and deliveries of food globally to healthcare workers, seniors, and others in need, free of charge to #MoveWhatMatters. In India, we committed 180,000 free rides to state/local governments and partnered with the National Health Authority of India (NHA) to provide 100,000 free rides to healthcare workers.
  • $50 Million: Allocated $50 million globally to purchase health & safety supplies for drivers across the world. In India, we are distributing over 3 million masks and 200,000 bottles of disinfectants and 200,000 bottles of sanitisers to drivers, free of cost.
  • $24 Million: Provided $24 million in financial assistance for drivers and delivery people around the world who needed to stop earning on the Uber app due to COVID-19.
  • 100,000+ orders delivered: In India, completed 100,000+ orders through Uber’s last mile delivery service, keeping vital supply chains moving during the lockdown.
  • 45,000+ essential trips: In India, facilitated essential trips to hospitals, pharmacies and clinics during the lockdown and completed 45,000+ trips on Uber Essential.
  • 130,000+ Safety Screens: In India, pioneered the safety screen, our roof-to-floor, plastic screen that separates the rider from the driver and facilitated installation in 43,000 cars and 87,000 auto rickshaws.
    100,000 Drivers supported: In India, disbursed grants to approximately 100,000 drivers through the Uber Driver Care Fund with an initial funding of $3.3M from Uber.
  • 1 million rides a week: Delhi NCR emerged as a top 10 global trips market for Uber in the month of September.
  • 50,000 rides to support vulnerable communities: In India, facilitated 50,000 free rides to leading NGOs, including Robin Hood Army, HelpAge India, CHILDLINE India Foundation and the National Association for the Blind.
  • 3000 EVs and E-rickshaws: Globally, Uber has pledged to become a fully zero-emission platform by 2040 and in India, has committed scaling up to 3,000 electric vehicles across 2W/3W/4W and E-rickshaws on the platform by the end of 2021.

With millions of Indians now moving again, Uber remains committed to offering riders convenient, safer and sustainable mobility solutions at a touch of button, helping cities ‘Build back better’. Over the past few months we have launched new services, including Uber Connect, a package delivery service that enables customers to transport packages from the safety of their homes; and Rentals, across our Car and Auto categories, which allows riders to book affordable multi-hour, multi-stop options to travel in the ‘new normal.’ We have also launched E-rickshaws on our platform to make urban commutes more affordable, efficient and eco-friendly.
