Belgharia Nimta Boys Athletic Playground came alive with rhythm, colour and emotion as Nrital Chanda Dance Centre (NCDC) completed 30 glorious years of its journey in dance with a grand cultural evening titled ‘30-er Jalsa’.
Founded and led by noted dancer, choreographer and Zee Bangla Director Sourav Chanda, NCDC has grown into a respected cultural institution in Kolkata. The evening was designed primarily as a platform for young dancers, who brought the stage alive with a vibrant mix of classical, contemporary, freestyle and fusion performances. From graceful solos to energetic group choreographies, the children displayed remarkable confidence, rhythm and stage presence, reflecting the strong foundation and training they receive at the academy.
The programme opened with students presenting dance sequences set to Rabindra Sangeet, followed by a captivating dance-drama “Meera Bai”, which deeply moved the audience. Popular Hindi and Bengali songs and Western music-based routines followed, each met with loud applause. A special ‘30-er Jalsa’ cake-cutting ceremony added warmth and celebration to the evening.
A special highlight of the evening was a unique performance by twelve senior citizens, all above 65 years of age, who are retired professionals. Choreographed and guided by Sourav Chanda, their performance was a powerful reminder that dance has no age and can reignite joy, confidence and purpose at any stage of life.
The event was graced by a distinguished gathering of cultural personalities including Malabika Sen, Bratati Choudhury, Sritama Bhattacharya, Deboparna Chakraborty, Deboleena Dutta, Kohinoor Sen Barat and Debraj Chakraborty. The programme was inaugurated by State Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose and MLA Madan Mitra, adding prestige to the celebration.
Speaking on the occasion, Sourav Chanda, Founder and Director of NCDC, said:
“This day is very special for me and for Nrital Chanda Dance Centre. We are completing 30 years of a beautiful journey. Over these decades, I have remained connected with thousands of students and learned so much from them. Today we also unveiled a new logo for NCDC. Art has the power to change lives, and that has always been our mission — to teach dance, create cultural platforms and transform lives through creativity.”
With colourful costumes, dynamic lighting and beautifully synchronised formations, the open-air venue turned into a vibrant cultural arena. Proud parents, teachers and well-wishers were visibly moved as the young performers showcased not only talent but discipline, teamwork and emotional depth far beyond their years.
As the final performance concluded, the audience rose in a standing ovation for the children and performers of NCDC — a fitting tribute to three decades of nurturing dreams, creativity and the enduring power of dance.
