Lopamudra Mitra is almost a household name wherever the Bengali language is spoken . She has always chosen to tread the path least traveled , and ” that has made all the difference .” Her first album came out in 1992 , and she will complete 30 glorious years of singing this year.
She ushered in the new genre of ” Kobitar Gan ” … music set to poetry with Benimadhab in 1996 , and there hasn’t been a performance since then where the audience , even after 25 years , hasn’t requested her to sing the same.
Lopamudra Mitra holds Rabindrasangeet the closest to her heart , yet she has never been afraid of experimenting with folk music or any other genre . Her folk albums have reached epic proportions and created a backdrop for many an event to date . Musicians and songwriters have penned songs and created soundscapes , keeping her distinctive style in mind and her Adhunik Gan or the modern pieces are also legendary .
We want to take this opportunity to thank the two men who have played pivotal roles in this 30 – year journey ; the late Shri Sameer Chattopadhyay and Shri Joy Sarkar .
Shri Sameer Chattopadhyay , lovingly called Chandukaka , or ChanduDa , was a family friend who mentored Lopamudra Mitra ; and Joy Sarkar , the acclaimed music director of this generation – her partner in the journey of life and music ; both .
