1 in 2 Indians frequently miss cleaning underbeds and furniture: Dyson ‘How India Cleans’ Study 2026

Today, Dyson unveiled the results of its first ‘How India Cleans’ study , which examines how Indian households clean, the frustrations that persist and what people expect from floorcare technology. The study finds that the challenge is not simply the time people spend cleaning, but whether their products clean effectively throughout the whole home.

“People are demanding more from their vacuum cleaners in a single clean, from tackling fine dust and long hair to cleaning across different surfaces and hard-to-reach spaces. Dyson vacuums are engineered to deliver advanced performance as complete systems for effective cleaning throughout the home. And as part of the Dyson difference, all our products are backed by relentless testing, so they are built to last.” – Tim Hare, Design and Development Engineer, Floor Care at Dyson.

Indians are putting in the time. But is every clean complete?
More than half of respondents spend 30 minutes to an hour cleaning their floors, and a further 11% spend one to two hours. Yet time spent does not always deliver the result people expect.

 Different surfaces, one cleaning routine: Hard flooring is prevalent, including marble (51%), vitrified or ceramic tiles (49%) and granite (43%), yet 72% of respondents also have carpets and rugs, so one routine must work across floor types.
 Hair remains a persistent cleaning frustration: More than one in three (36%) identify human or pet hair left on floors as a common cleaning frustration. Long hair can also wrap around conventional brush bars, creating an additional task.
 The neglected spots: Over half (52%) say areas beneath furniture are frequently missed, while 48% struggle to clean corners and edges effectively.
 Out of sight, only to settle again: 38% say dust settles again quickly after cleaning. Household dust is light enough to become airborne through everyday movement, so an effective clean must remove it completely, not simply move it.

Seeking solutions: what do people want from floorcare technology?
• Technology leads the choice: When choosing floorcare products, 61% of respondents cite better technology, followed by cleaning performance (54%) and trust (49%). By comparison, 21% cite better prices or offers.
• A whole-home task, not a floor-only routine: Respondents use their vacuum cleaners under furniture (71%), on hard floors (70%), carpets and rugs (69%), upholstery (69%), and beds and mattresses (63%).
