World Brain Day, observed annually on July 22, is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about brain health and neurological disorders. This year’s theme, “Brain Health and Prevention,” emphasizes the importance of brain health in preventing and managing disabilities. The day serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to support those affected by neurological conditions and to promote brain health for all.
The brain is the most complex organ in the human body, responsible for controlling our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Neurological disorders, including stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease, affect millions of people worldwide. These conditions not only impact the individuals suffering from them but also place a significant burden on families and healthcare systems.
Dr. Amitabha Chanda, Senior Consultant – Neurosurgery (Brain & Spine) at Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital Mukundapur, said “The brain is the most complex organ in the body. It controls breathing, emotion, memory, touch, vision, temperature, hunger, motor skills and regulates our body. Preserve your brain like the most precious possession of your life. There are three ways you can keep your brain healthy. The first way is to exercise regularly, enhancing blood circulation in the whole body including the brain and showering the brain with oxygen and nutrients. The second way is to maintain a healthy balanced diet, which includes green vegetables, nuts, fish oils, etc. Avoid junk foods, smoking, and alcohol.The third way is to keep your brain active. Read a lot, socialize a lot, learn new things, solve puzzles. If you brain is active and healthy, you can win the world.”
Additionally Dr Arindam Das Senior Consultant – Neurosurgery Narayana Hospital, Howrah, stated, “Every year World Federation of Neurology (WFN) observes 22nd July as World Brain Day (WBD) to create awareness about the Neurological diseases not only among the common people but also among the health care providers including Neurologists. This year’s theme is Brain Health and Prevention which revolves around five key pillars: early detection may prevent neurological disorders; prevention of brain health issues needs global education; socio- economic factors or geographic location should not be barriers to prevention; healthcare professionals and policy-makers play important roles in assessing brain health problem and recognizing brain health should be considered as fundamental human right.”
