Lack of awareness on liver health and comprehensive facilities is a key factor for the country registering an increasing number of cases of liver diseases and its attendant mortality year-on-year. The launch of the MGM Liver Clinic is an effort to reach out to patients in Eastern India and build awareness about liver diseases and its prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
It is estimated that around 1 lakh people are affected by chronic liver disease in West Bengal every year. With the launch of this facility, MGM Healthcare will address the liver health concerns of patients in Eastern India better and they will now have a facility for world-class treatment for liver failure at their doorstep. It is estimated that at least 5,000 people die from liver failure and liver cancer in Eastern India every year and at least 500 of them can be saved with timely medical intervention and liver transplant. The costs of liver transplant would be around 19-20 lakhs.
Speaking about the liver clinic, Dr. Thiagarajan S said, “MGM Liver Clinic is one of the many steps taken at MGM Healthcare to bring world-class healthcare services across the country. Chronic viral infection of liver, sedentary lifestyle, alcohol intake and fatty food intake are the leading causes of liver diseases. With the latest advances in treatments such as minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic liver surgeries, even complex liver and bile duct surgeries can be done with less pain, resulting in quick post-operative recovery for a minimal cost.”
Dr. Thiagarajan shed light on the prevailing situation of liver ailments in India. He said one of the major causes for liver cirrhosis is Hepatitis B or C, alcoholic liver disease and the most recent cause, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. 25% of liver failures are due to alcohol consumption and women are more prone to liver damage from drinking alcohol than men. In today’s scenario, the latest challenges are the patients who develop sudden liver failure within a few days, which can prove to be fatal in few cases. He also said, at present, there are more than 1,00,000 new liver cancer cases annually, which results in more than 50,000 deaths. Both primary liver tumours (originating from liver cells, also called hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma), and secondary liver tumours (liver metastases or spread from other cancers like colon cancer) can be treated by liver surgery or transplantation if they are detected and managed early. Local treatments like radio frequency ablation, TACE, and advanced medical treatment are also available.
