Dharohar by WICCI: Spotlight on Handloom Artisans at Ibis Kolkata”

The WICCI Arts Council, West Bengal, honoured National Handloom Day by hosting “Dharohar: A Heartfelt Tribute to the Artisans” on August 3, 2024, at Ibis Kolkata, Rajarhat. This event celebrated the invaluable contributions of artisans while raising awareness about the challenges they face.


At the event, Paromita Ghosh, Director of Candid Communication, was announced as the new President of the WICCI Arts Leadership Council, succeeding Reena Dewan for the forthcoming period. The announcement was made by eminent playwright Ramanjit Kaur, who is the National President of the WICCI Arts Leadership Council.


The evening featured a vibrant lifestyle fashion show showcasing designs inspired by the intricate techniques and vibrant colours of handloom fabrics. Notable personalities from various fields walked the ramp, including Mr. Abhinav Chandra, IAS, Director of IESWM; Mr. Hugh Boylan, Australian Consul-General in Kolkata; and Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner. Other esteemed guests included Shri Aneesh Sarkar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar; Ms. Amita Mishra, General Manager at Ibis; Paromita Ghosh, Founder-Director of Candid Communication; and Reena Dewan, State President of the West Bengal Arts Leadership Council.


In addition to the fashion show, the event hosted insightful panel discussions featuring experts from the government, industry, and cultural sectors. These discussions focused on the future of our weavers and karigars, who are the custodians of these age-old art forms, and explored strategies for supporting their livelihoods while ensuring the sustainability of their crafts.
“Dharohar” served as a platform to engage in thought-provoking conversations about the artisanal sector’s state and the steps needed to safeguard its future. The WICCI Arts Council recognised the vital role artisans play in preserving rich cultural heritage and aimed to foster a supportive environment for their crafts.
